  1. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Must be able to perform all duties and operate all coating equipment including, but not limited to, the following in a proficient manner to produce products which meet specifications:

•Coating lines, including hoists and roll lifts, auto-splice and fixed position unwinds, tension units, coating heads of various types, ovens of various types, cooling cans and/or units, accumulators, in-line slitters, various types of windups and controls, including process controls, temperature, speed, tension, sheet and coating thickness, profile, splicing, etc.

•Other specialty coating devices and ovens

•Batch mixers, pumps, valving and controls

•Utilize heavy equipment to unload and stage flammable hazardous materials.

  • ESSENTIAL RESONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB

Some of the general and specific duties included are as follows:

-Check schedule to determine product to be coated or batches required.

-Communicate with prior and following shift coater operators to ensure operating continuity, and check with supervisor to resolve any questions regarding schedule, material, or quality.

-Set up all machine controls, oven heats, coating head needs, etc., to prepare for coating of paper, film, or other substrates.

-Obtain specified source rolls of paper from storage area utilizing heavy equipment, (fork truck and roll grabber), as required. Load source roll onto unwind unit utilizing hoist or roll lift where appropriate.

-Thread coating line according to specification for product being run.

-Adjust all controls, guiders, accumulator, etc., to make product within specification.

-Operate flying splice unit to allow continuous operations, according to specification.

-Install correct Maier rod and set rotation speed to meet specification. Clean or replace as necessary to maintain product in spec and without defect.

-Wrap infeed pull roll as necessary for film products or as otherwise required, install filter bags.

-Maintain coating pan cleanliness and proper operating level, cleaning as necessary.

-Adjust wiping ears as necessary to maintain dry edge per specification.

-Monitor and insure smooth, even, and defect-free coating out of coating head into oven and adjust or clean accordingly to maintain high quality coating. Return any overflow material from pan to batch tanks.

-Operate coating line at optimum speed with maximum as provided in the specification.

-Clean oven and all equipment, rollers, etc., to maintain defect-free product.

-Make all splices at unwind, or on the line in the event of a web break. Utilize specified method and technique to minimize any scrap.

-Set knives and trim removal system on the in-line slitter for optimum removal of trim.

-Adjust accumulator rolls as necessary to disallow wrinkles and adjust weights to allow optimum speed operation.

-Install core labels utilizing labeler as necessary and load cores on shaft, lined up with in-line slitting to meet specifications.

-Process rolls of specified length, width and tension and perform cut-offs at windup mandrel with line continuously processing product. Utilize proper cutting tools and technique.

-Utilize swing-out shaft technique and roll take-off arm to unload finished rolls. Utilize hoist to remove film jumbos or other specified materials from windup.

-Apply adhesive as required to windup cores on mandrels to allow starting new material to adhere.

-Work with other line operator as required for threading of ovens, cleaning, web break repair, of ovens etc.

-Mix batches per specification using the formula supplied by the supervisor or lab. Post a copy of the formula on the batch mixing tank when batch mix is complete. Charge film batches, (hazardous material), as required and operate drum lift, etc.

-Help clean latex tanks when needed or batch tanks, (confined space entry).

-Other work assigned from time to time by the supervisor.

-Work performed on the coating lines requires frequent bending and lifting in a very repetitive routine, as well as repetitive reaching, elbow, shoulder, and wrist action. Hoists and roll lifts are in place to aid in lifting, but an operator could experience maximum unassisted lifting of up to 100 lbs. cannot be sensitive to solvent chemicals. Must always be able to work at a fast pace.

-Install correct maier rod and set rotation speed to meet specification. Clean or replace as necessary to maintain product in spec and without defect.

-Wrap infeed pull roll as necessary for film products or as otherwise required, install filter bags.
